MP3 to YouTube: Make a Video With One Image
Make a video from your finished track and cover art or illustration.
- You can upload an MP3 to YouTube after combining it with an image to make an MP4.
- Keep the artwork still if you want people to focus on it, or add a waveform to show the music's movement.
- If you add a waveform, place it clear of the artwork's focal point and the track title.
Can you upload an MP3 directly to YouTube?
No. Combine it with an image and turn it into an MP4 or another video file before uploading. (YouTube's official instructions)
You do not need to shoot new footage. A finished track or vocal mix and one piece of cover art or illustration are enough.
Choose what to show with one image
| What you want to show | Method | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| The artwork and the track | Add audio to a still image | You want people to look at the artwork while listening |
| Movement in the music | Add a waveform to the image | You want motion that follows the track without filming |
| Lyrics | Show the words in sequence | You want people to follow the words |
| A performance or story | Edit recorded footage | You want to show hands, expressions or a scene |
You can make still-image or lyric videos in a general video editor.
If you want a waveform over the image, Sonoray is a good fit. No sign-in is required, and the video has no watermark. The track and image are processed in your browser, so you can work on an unreleased track without sending it to a server.

Leave space for the waveform without hiding the artwork
Keep faces and the track title visible, and place the waveform in open space.
For a landscape YouTube video, prepare a 16:9 background. If you want to show a square cover in full, place it in the middle of a landscape canvas in an image editor and save the result as one image. Leave room below or to either side for the waveform.
In the example above, the waveform sits over the water at the bottom of the night scene, away from the moon and track title.
If the artwork has no open space, leaving it as a still image without a waveform is also an option.

Make an MP4 and upload it to YouTube
- In the Editor, load the track and background image, then choose 16:9 and Bars
- Under Adjust, set the position and size so the waveform avoids the focal point
- Set the passage under Range, then save an MP4 from Export
- In YouTube Studio on a computer, choose Create → Upload videos and select the MP4
Put the track and artist names in the title, and add credits and listening links to the description. Play it once while it is still private to check the sound and picture before publishing.
See Create your first video for the detailed controls.
Make a waveform video from a track and one image
No sign-in needed. A sample track is included, so you can try it without your own files.
